Janne Myllynen sets himself high requirements at his work. He appreciates a technique, which requires traditional hand skills and competence – something, which we are used to see in the work of the old masters.

According to Janne Myllynen, experimentation at contemporary art is stressed at expense of the technique. The traditional style is demanding, it requires self-discipline and knowledge of tradition. The earlier work of Janne Myllynen are classical landscapes and portraits.

A long-standing concentration on a figurative painting has shaped him a precise and virtuous painter. Janne Myllynen tries to avoid unnecessary decorativeness and therefore the details function as evoking signals.
In some paintings the use of leaf gold – which he learned to use when he got to know fresco– and icon painting at Valamo monastery – create mythological, nameless secrecy linked with sacred art.

Some of his interpretations of the characters in Bible also allude to sacredness. For example “Kain mercenary soldier” in which a young, muscular soldier sits without one arm, still radiating strength. He is simultaneously a killer and a victim, a contemporary icon of a human tragedy.
